MAREP is a department set up within ESCOM to implement the Malawi Rural Electrification Programme which is funded by the Government of Malawi and the World Bank. The programme is implemented in phases and so far seven phases have been completed covering various Centres throughout the country. The department operates as contractor to Government and works closely with the Department of Energy within the Ministry of Energy and Mining. All infrastructure under MAREP belongs to the Government of Malawi but it is managed by ESCOM in terms of maintenance, operations and new connections.
