The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) says it appreciates the efforts being done by ESCOM in order to improve its service delivery despite there being too much unwarranted negativity about the corporation in the public domain.
The sentiments were expressed by MERA Board Chairman Right Reverend Dr. Joseph Bvumbwe on Wednesday 1st August 2018 when he led a delegation comprising MERA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Collins Magalasi, MERA Director of legal Affairs Ishmael Chioko and other members of MERA Management, on a visit to ESCOM National Control Centre in Blantyre.
According to the MERA Board Chairman, there is a lot happening in ESCOM such that electricity customers are assured of better service delivery in the near future. He promised ESCOM Management that MERA would do everything in its power to assist the corporation achieve its objective.
The visit was organized for MERA to appreciate progress in the refurbishment of the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system of ESCOM, as one of the components in the United States of America (USA) Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) US$350.7 Compact. SCADA system is used to remotely monitor and control Power Supply network in most of ESCOM.
SCADA system will improve Power Supply Reliability in the country, in the sense that it will be easy to monitor and control transmission equipment in Power Transmission Backbone and in most substations. The quality of Supply will be improved as Engineers will have instant control of system Voltage and Frequencies. Under fault conditions Engineers will be able to immediately operate transmission equipment, and therefore will reduce down time. It will also help in planning and scheduling activities of the Electricity Market such as Demand Forecast, Day Ahead Market, Week Ahead Market, and according to the Market Rules. SCADA therefore, brings significant savings in terms of time and money to ESCOM and better service delivery to customers.
